Flower power

Hardly a day has passed without some rainfall during this summer. Still, it is good for the grass and also tadpoles. Yes, tadpoles are still swimming about in puddles which gives some indication of the weather so far this year. I suspect the tadpoles still think it is spring and see no urgency in developing legs so long as there is still plenty of water.

Schule im "Grünen"; Enztalgymnasium goes Sommerberg-Hotel

Die 10. Klasse des www.enztal-gymnasium.de besucht im Zuge des
Geschichtsunterrichts das Sommerber-Hotel. Am "lebenden" Objekt wird
die Wirtschaftliche Entwicklung, der touristische Aufstieg und Fall
der Region und die belebte Geschichte des 100jährigen Hotels
besprochen.
Um dem verbindenden Unterricht und den Austauschschülern aus den USA
Rechnung zu tragen, wurde der Vortrag und die Führung komplett in
Englisch gehalten.

Mit Luftballons, Zaubertricks und guter Laune zieht er Jung und Alt in

Artscreen – Wandbild II

To celebrate the Sommerberg hotel centenary year the artscreens, depicting aspects of the Black Forest, have been re-hung. Tilman checks the finished work from his high vantage point before descending to earth.

The back-lit artscreens really come to life at night especially when it is wet, which seems to be every day at present. Provided a storm does not rip them down in the meantime, they should remain up until at least the end of September.

10.000 Jubiläumsmünzen aus Keramik

Das Töpferhaus Hasenmühle (www.namenstasse.de) verschenkt 10.000 rote
Jubiläumsmünzen. Die Sammlerstücke werden großflächig in und um
Bad Wilbad versteckt (Kurpark, Wanderwege, Parkbänke...) und direkt
verschenkt.
Die Münzen haben einen Wert von einem Euro und werden im Sommerberg-

Die Stadt am Berg

The sculpture ‘Die Stadt am Berg’ is finally completed and it can be viewed in the top Bergbahn (funicular) station, Sommerberg. The sculpture is the joint work of students from the International Hochschule, Calw, Bad Wildbad and artists and guests who visited the funicular station last year. Winter wilderness

Another foot of snow overnight ensures a record winter for snow since I arrived in 2006. Meanwhile the sheep tuck into their daily breakfast of hay, their only food source when snow covers the hillside.

Icicles

Its February already ... time flies. After a prolonged cold spell for most of January with temperatures fluctuating between –5 and –10 degrees, Sommerberg now has over a foot of snow for good measure. Perfect skiing conditions as the snow is still light and powdery. Above giant icicles hang from the Sommerberg hotel conservatory and some of them, over a meter long, have taken on unusual forms.

2009

Hot air balloons prepare for take off

Spectacular firework displays along the Enz valley and numerous small hot air balloons start 2009. After rain and days of freezing temperatures the ground was like an ice rink on New Years Eve making walking anywhere particularly difficult. Anyway best wishes for 2009 to anyone who takes the time to follow this blog and hopefully we will have something of interest to add to the blog in the coming year.

Misty morning

A sea of mog hangs over the Enz valley this morning. Black Forest trees line the horizon and above the sky is a clear dark blue. Its pretty warm too and a perfect day for a walk. Congratulations to BO.

First snow

After the sunny weekend the weather turns cold and today the first snow has arrived. Not a lot admittedly but then it is still October, just.

Autumn

The weather is glorious over the weekend making it ideal for a trek to Gruenehuette. In fact the autumn weather seems to be an improvement on the summer. By mid morning Sunday the sun was strong enough to give a bit of a tan despite some wispy clouds. The warm weather may have just come too late however for edible mushrooms as they seemed to be very thin on the ground.

Oktoberfest

Beer and music the hallmark of the Octoberfest arrives on Sommerberg over the weekend along with displays of chainsaw sculpting courtesey of Michael Tamoszus. Michael has produced a variety of impressive work much of it in the form of wild animals and birds so his website is well worth looking at:

Bergbahn illuminations

I must admit the idea of floodlights pointed at my windows throughout the night had me somewhat concerned. As it turns out the lights are soft and not too strong so that the lighting up of the Bergbahn building turns out to be quite attractive. Last year a floodlight positioned at the rear of the building and pointed towards the kitchen window completely destroyed the wonderful view of the Enztal that I had at night and I had visions of more of the same. Thankfully it was not the case this time.
